CONSTITUTION
OF
THE MASSASOIT WRITERS CLUB
AT MASSASOIT COMMUNITY COLLEGE
This student club is considered to be academic. Students engaged in the writing processes will ultimately benefit in many areas of their education and personal lives. Members will, through the writing processes, improve their writing skill and vocabulary. Students of the Massasoit Writers Club will engage in the study of various forms of literature, create
poetry and short stories in a group setting, and will read, review, and critique writing of other members. Members will have the opportunity to coordinate their efforts tin order to publish an anthology of their work, which may include works by other students at Massasoit Community College who are not Massasoit Writer Club members, and/or faculty and staff. All club affairs will be handled according to the stipulations set forth in the Massasoit Community College Student Organization Handbook.
ARTICLE 1 Name
This organization shall be known as the Massasoit Writers Club Massasoit Community College
ARTICLE 2 Purpose
This club will be a starting place to learn to give and receive creative criticism. Creative writing comes from a very personal perspective. Students will bring their creative writing into a public forum, read and critique others’ stories and poems honestly and fairly. The goal is to help students to improve their confidence and skill in writing. Students will write a poem or short story, and improve their knowledge of words. The group will build and continue to build on a ‘How To Self Publish’ guide for writers. The club will have activities such as poetry readings, visiting authors, and other programs toward this end including, but not limited to, the publication of a Creative Writing journal. The club will meet weekly.
ARTICLE 3 Membership
Membership is open to all students of Massasoit Community College.
ARTICLE 4 Officers
President
The president shall oversee the Massasoit Writers Club. S/he will guide the members in planning and organizing events. S/he must be a Massasoit Student. S/he will be responsible for preparing an agenda prior to each meeting, schedule meetings, head program planning, head any publications made by the members, and work closely with other officers helping to coordinate their efforts. In the event that the office of treasurer is vacant, the President shall be responsible for the duties of that office.
Vice -President
The vice-president shall assist in overseeing the Massasoit Writers Club. S/he will help guide the members in planning events. S/he will work closely with the President and take on the role of President in such cases that demand it. S/he must be a Massasoit Student. In the event that the position of Secretary is vacant, the Vice President shall assume the responsibilities of that office.
Secretary
The Secretary shall keep accurate minutes and attendance of the Massasiot Writers Club group meetings. S/he shall also carry out all correspondence necessary for the club. S/he must be a Massasoit Student. This office may include the duties of Treasurer.
Treasurer
The Treasurer shall keep records of the accounts of the Massasoit Writers Club. S/he must be a Massasoit Student.
The treasurer shall implement all budget processes according to the stipulations of the Massasoit Community College Student Organization Handbook.
ARTICLE 5 Term and Election of Officers
Election of Officers shall take place at an open meeting of the Massasoit Writers Club on a scheduled time during the first second week in October in the new the academic year. Each candidate will have an opportunity to present him/herself before the electing body to state the basis by which he/she should be elected for the position for which he/she is running including his/her experiences and qualifications. All current club members are eligible to vote in the election of officers. A current member is any student who has attended at least one meeting and who intends to participate in the club during the school year. A counted ballot filled out by each voter will determine elections.
Each officer shall serve a term of one academic year, and is eligible for re-election the following academic year. Officers can hold office for a maximum of two academic years, but must be reelected to the second term. If an officer is unable to complete a term, an interim officer will be determined by a special election. That officer will serve for the remainder of the academic year, and is eligible for re-election. However, if s/he begins a term of office part way through the semester, that time in office will count as one academic school year.
ARTICLE 6 Funds
Funds accruing for the Massasoit Writers Club shall be dispersed according to the needs of the club. This shall be decided by the Officers and Advisor(s), and be brought before a general meeting for discussion. All money matters will be voted on at the general meeting.
ARTICLE 7 Procedure of Allocation
The Treasurer shall submit written forms to the Office of Student Life stating the amount of money needed from the funds and the reason for the allocation. The Treasurer shall disperse the monies when they have been received. The budget process implemented according to the stipulations of the Massasoit Community College Student Organization Handbook.
ARTICLE 8 Advisors
The Advisor(s) to the Massasoit Writers Club shall be a faculty or staff member of the college. The role of the advisor shall be to assist the group toward achieving its goals. It is required that advisors attend meeting and supervise events sponsored by the group. Advisors should also assist with programming and budge decision, strengthen leadership, and encourage discussion among group members. However under the assistance and support of the advisor(s), the Creative Writing Club will be run and led by students.
ARTICLE 9 Amendments
Changes may be made to the Constitution herewith and by members under a two-thirds majority of the eligible voting members. No vote or discussion of a vote to amend the constitution may proceed without at least one third of the active members present.
